How it works

The generator builds options from templates for product, collection, home and blog pages, then fits them to length. Titles keep your brand name at the end if there is room, and drop it before cutting any words. Descriptions are built from whole sentences, most important first; a sentence that does not fit is left out rather than cut in half. Every option shows its length against the limit and whether your keyword is in it.

Nothing is invented. The options only use the words you typed, so a number or claim appears only if you gave it. If you want different wording, the "Improve with AI" button asks a language model for three more of each, using only the same facts, and runs them through the same length checks. It is limited to a few requests an hour per person.

Why 60 and 155 characters

Google does not publish a character limit. It shortens titles and snippets in search results to fit the width of the device, so the cut-off depends on the letters used. It also says it may rewrite a title that does not describe the page well, and often builds the snippet from page content rather than the meta description. source, checked 25 September 2026

Around 60 characters for a title and 155 for a description is the common working limit that keeps most text whole. Shopify’s own editor allows a 70-character title and suggests up to 160 for the description, so staying at 60 and 155 leaves a margin inside both. source, checked 25 September 2026

A worked example

For a product called "Cedar and Smoke Soy Candle" from a shop called Hearth & Wick, with the keyword "soy candle", the detail "hand-poured in small batches and burns for about 50 hours" and "Free UK delivery over £40", the first title is "Cedar and Smoke Soy Candle | Hearth & Wick" (42 characters). The first description is "Cedar and Smoke Soy Candle: hand-poured in small batches and burns for about 50 hours. Free UK delivery over £40. Shop now at Hearth & Wick." (140 characters). Both contain the keyword.

Where to put them in Shopify

Open the product, collection, page or blog post in your Shopify admin, scroll to the search engine listing section and choose edit. For the home page, go to Online Store, then Preferences. Each page’s title and description should be unique.

Common mistakes

  • The same description on every product. Google may ignore it, and a shopper comparing results learns nothing.
  • Keyword lists. "Soy candle, candles, scented candle, gift candle" reads as spam. Use the phrase once, naturally.
  • Promises the page does not keep. If the description says free delivery, the page should say it too.
  • Writing the brand first on every title. Unless people search for your brand, lead with what the page is.
  • Leaving Shopify’s default. Without your own, Shopify uses the product title and the start of the description, which is rarely written for a search result.

What it does not do

It does not research keywords or check what currently ranks. It cannot see your page, so it cannot tell whether the page delivers what the description promises. The SEO agent checks every page on your store and writes titles and descriptions for all of them. To check the text on the page itself, use the product description grader.

Questions people ask

How long should a Shopify meta description be?

Aim for about 155 characters or fewer, with the point first. Google shortens longer ones to fit the screen. Shopify’s editor suggests up to 160.

How long should a meta title be?

About 60 characters or fewer. Shopify allows 70, but Google may cut anything wider than the result.

Does the meta description affect rankings?

Treat it as the advert for your page rather than a ranking lever. Google describes it as one source for the snippet under your result, and the snippet is often what people read before choosing which result to click. source, checked 25 September 2026

Why did Google show different text from my meta description?

Google builds snippets mostly from page content and uses the meta description when it describes the page better. A description that matches what the page says is more likely to be used. source, checked 25 September 2026

Is my text sent anywhere?

Only if you press "Improve with AI". The templates and checks run in your browser. The AI button sends the fields you filled in to our server, which asks the model and returns the results; nothing is stored.
