Holiday shipping cutoff emails for Shopify stores

2026 USPS holiday shipping deadlines and how to email your customers about them: send timeline, subject lines, and what to say when standard shipping closes.

2026 carrier deadlines (US)

For gift buyers, "will it arrive in time?" is the deciding question in December. Your cutoff emails answer it.

The last days before Christmas show how much that question matters. Last season, curbside pickup peaked on December 23, when it carried 39.0% of online orders at US retailers that offer it (Adobe). Shoppers worried about delivery look for another way to get the gift there in time. If you offer local pickup or gift cards, that's the week to say so.

USPS's recommended send-by dates for delivery by December 25 in the contiguous US put Ground Advantage and First-Class Mail on Thursday, December 17, 2026 (USPS):

For Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and US territories, USPS moves Ground Advantage a day earlier, to Wednesday, December 16, 2026 (USPS). The other three services keep the same dates.

International dates come about a week earlier. To Canada, Europe, Mexico and Australia/New Zealand, USPS's First-Class Package International and Priority Mail International date is Wednesday, December 9, 2026, and Priority Mail Express International is Wednesday, December 16, 2026 (USPS). Military mail to APO/FPO/DPO addresses by Ground Advantage goes first of all: Wednesday, November 4, 2026 (USPS). If you have customers with family overseas or in the military, that one belongs in a November email.

Three email outlines

1. The dates email (early December). A small table: shipping option, order-by date, price. Your own cutoffs, not the carrier's. One line on international orders. A link to the gift guide.

2. Last day for standard shipping. The date and time in the subject line and again in the first line. Three quick gift picks that are in stock. One button. Leave out anyone who ordered in the last two days.

3. The gift card rescue. For after the express cutoff. Lead with "It still gets there on time." Show the gift card, how it's delivered (email or print), and the amounts. If you have a shop or pickup point, say where and until when.

What not to do

  • Don't promise delivery dates the carrier doesn't guarantee. Say "order by" and "recommended".
  • Don't send only one cutoff email. People need the reminder.
  • Don't forget international customers. Their dates come about a week before domestic ones.
  • Don't announce a carrier date before the carrier publishes it.

Questions people ask

What is the last day to ship USPS Ground Advantage for Christmas 2026?

USPS recommends Thursday, December 17, 2026 for USPS Ground Advantage and First-Class Mail in the contiguous US, Friday, December 18, 2026 for Priority Mail and Saturday, December 19, 2026 for Priority Mail Express ([USPS](https://www.usps.com/holiday/holiday-shipping-dates.htm)).

Should my cutoff be the same as the carrier's?

No. Set yours a day or two earlier to allow for your own packing and processing time.

Have UPS and Canada Post published their 2026 holiday dates?

Not as of October 1, 2026. Check each carrier's own holiday page in November before you announce a date that depends on them.

Other carriers, as of October 1, 2026

Your cutoff = carrier date − your processing time. If orders take two days to pack, your standard-shipping cutoff for USPS Ground Advantage is Tuesday, December 15, 2026.

  • FedEx has published its 2026 shipping deadlines, as a document linked from its holiday page (FedEx). Its holiday schedule shows FedEx closed on Thanksgiving, Thursday, November 26, 2026 and Christmas Day, Friday, December 25, 2026, with modified service on Thursday, December 24, 2026 (FedEx).
  • UPS had not published 2026 recommended ship-by dates as of October 1, 2026. Its holiday page listed the days it is closed, not last days to ship.
  • Canada Post had not published 2026 holiday sending dates as of October 1, 2026. Its holiday page still showed the previous year's guidelines. Shipping inside Canada? Check again in November.

What to put in the email

  • The exact dates, with the timezone.
  • Which shipping option to choose, by date.
  • Gift wrap or gift note options.
  • A gift card link for latecomers.
  • Where each date comes from, if you quote a carrier: "USPS recommends…" reads as honest, not as a promise.

Plan it with Tilly

Tilly's email calendar does not hold carrier shipping cutoffs, so you set those dates yourself. What it does plan is the gift moment: Christmas gets a teaser 10 days before, a main send 5 days before and a last call 2 days before. In 2026 that last call lands on Wednesday, December 23, 2026, after every USPS domestic date above, so write it about gift cards, express shipping or pickup rather than standard delivery. Each email goes to Klaviyo as a draft with its date filled in, and you can change the date there before you send it.
