The post-purchase flow for Shopify stores

A post-purchase flow for Shopify stores that reduces returns and earns the second order: timing, full copy, separate paths for first-time and repeat buyers, and setup notes.

The flow at a glance

The post-purchase flow protects the order you just won and sets up the next one. A customer who knows how to use what they bought is less likely to return it and more likely to buy again.

First-time buyers

Repeat buyers: one thank-you email, then straight to what to try next.

  1. 1Email 1: Thank you
  2. 2Email 2: How to use it
  3. 3Email 3: Check in
  4. 4Email 4: What to try next

Email 1: Thank you

Subject: Order confirmed, and thank you

Preview: Here is what happens next

A short, warm thank you from the founder or team. When it ships, how to track it, and a reply-to that reaches a person.

Email 2: How to use it

Subject: How to get the most from your product

Preview: Three tips from customers who love it

Three practical tips. Where it helps, a short video or GIF. The mistake people make most often.

Why it works: most returns and bad reviews come from using the product wrong. This email prevents them.

Email 3: Check in

Subject: How is it going?

Preview: Reply if anything is not right

Two lines. Ask how it is going. Remind them of the returns policy. Invite a reply.

Email 4: What to try next

Subject: What pairs well with your product

Preview: Picked for you

One or two products that genuinely go with what they bought, with the reason. Not a catalogue.

Setup notes

Klaviyo: trigger on "Placed Order". Split by order count: first order versus repeat. Time the second email to typical delivery time for your store. Keep your transactional confirmation separate if Shopify already sends it, so customers are not double-emailed.

Omnisend: use the order-placed workflow and a split on order count.

Both: hand off to the review request flow after delivery, and to replenishment for products that run out.

The split, as Klaviyo writes it

The first-time and repeat paths above come from one conditional split straight after the trigger. The first-time branch is anyone whose order count is exactly one; everyone else takes the short repeat path. source, checked 25 September 2026

Keep order and shipping confirmations in their own transactional flows. They have to reach every customer, including people who never agreed to marketing, and mixing them into this flow means a marketing unsubscribe can stop someone hearing that their parcel has shipped. source, checked 25 September 2026

Time the how-to email against your real shipping window rather than a round number. Too early and it is forgotten by the time the parcel arrives; too late and the customer has already worked it out, or given up. source, checked 25 September 2026

Omnisend

Omnisend's post-purchase presets cover product reviews, cross-sell, order follow-up and customer reactivation, all started by an order. Build this flow from the order follow-up preset and hand the later jobs to the review and reactivation presets rather than stacking everything in one workflow. source, checked 25 September 2026

What to measure

  • Second-order rate within 60 and 90 days
  • Return rate for customers who got the how-to email versus those who did not
  • Replies to the check-in email: a free source of product feedback

What the platform's own research says

Klaviyo reports that post-purchase messages get a 217% higher open rate, over 500% higher click rate and 90% higher revenue per recipient than the average campaign sent through Klaviyo. That is Klaviyo's research across its own customers, not a target for your store; use it to decide whether this flow deserves your time, then judge it on your own second-order rate. source, checked 25 September 2026

Questions people ask

Should post-purchase emails sell?

Not straight away. The first emails should help the customer get the most from what they bought. Cross-sells come after they have used it.

Should first-time and repeat buyers get different emails?

Yes. First-time buyers need reassurance and how-to help. Repeat buyers already know you, so keep it short and move to what is new.

Will a customer get this flow and an abandoned cart email in the same week?

They can, if they buy and then leave a second cart. Turn on Smart Sending in Klaviyo, which caps how many messages one person receives in a set window, and check which flows overlap before adding more. source, checked 25 September 2026

Where do review requests fit?

After the customer has used the product, in their own flow. The review request page covers the timing; this flow should end on the check-in and the what-to-try-next email.

How Tilly builds it

Tilly writes the how-to email from the questions and complaints in your reviews, so it prevents the problems your own customers actually have.

How Tilly's email agent runs it

Tilly's default post-purchase flow is one thank-you email, 1 day after the order, and it never carries a discount. That rule is fixed in Tilly for this flow and for review requests: a code that arrives just after someone paid full price tells them they paid too much.

The longer sequence on this page is the fuller version, worth building when your product needs explaining. Tilly's default covers the thank-you and goes to Klaviyo as a draft flow; the how-to, check-in and what-to-try-next emails, and the split between first and repeat buyers, are yours to add around it.
